Music Video Rough Edit 3

Before creating my second rough edit for my film I decided to re-shoot most of the footage I had filmed previously. This is because some of the imagery was too dark and so in my second draft there is a lot of new footage. Also, due to complications with work and other commitments, my first choice in casting had to change too. The female in the first draft become too much of a reliability and so in order to meet deadlines I had to make to decision to change.

The first step in creating my second rough draft was to create a new project in order to add the new footage. I named this Rough Edit 2 so that I wouldn't get confused as to which edit I needed to be improving on.

Once the project had been created this allowed me to import the media I had gathered through filming off my SD card and memory stick.

I used File > Import > Media... to import the files from my memory stick and SD card onto Final Cut Pro in order to begin the editing process. I selected all of the files that were available so that  I would not miss any clips and imported those selected files. They then appeared in my project dashboard.

I then selected all of the files that I had imported and dragged them into a timeline so that I could edit them. This is where I added the music track and placed the clips in the order I wanted them in.

I used tools such as the blade, trim and select tool to crop the clips down to the size I needed them at. I also still have a black background in place where I still need to have clips added.

Music Video Edit 2 (Mock Exam)

My second edit is when I started to edit the footage I had got properly. I added the song into this clips and used other tools to cut down clips and separate some clips so that I could add different footage in between long clips that would have been too long to have originally.

In order to add the music I did it in the same way that I added my clips to this project: File > Import > Media...

I then selected the music that I wanted to add and then it showed up with the rest of my clips. I highlighted the music I wanted and then dragged it onto my project. Having the music on the clips before editing made this process a lot easier for me as I managed to get everything in order and in time with the song.

In order to cut down clips or separate parts of clips, I used the blade tool which cuts a clip at the point it is selected so that you can use a section of a clip in particular. I used this tool quite frequently so that some clips didn't seem too long and boring.

Also, some of my original clips were really dark and so to fix this I used the colour adjustment and correction tools. This was a way of changing the colour, saturation and the exposure of my clips in order to make them brighter. However, this did reduce the quality of some clips and so the plan is when I go back out to film other parts of my music video, I will attempt to re - film these parts in a better light.

After editing and getting everything in place I added in some black screens in order to highlight places where I need to add new footage once I have filmed for a second time. This is so that the footage I already had could be placed where I needed them to be without having to keep some shots really long in order to have the timings of the lyrics correct.

I can also use this as a planning device to see what I now need and how/when I'm going to get it.

Music Video Edit 1

My first edit is an arrangement of the clips I managed to capture on my first day of filming. In this sequence the music I am using has not been inserted yet and the sound from the original clips is still intact.

In order to begin the editing process, I used the software Final Cut Pro on a Mac. I firstly had to take all of the clips of the SD card that I had used and place them in my files, which is a simply copy and paste.

I then created a new project in final cut and named it Music Video, so that I knew where I kept all my files and could return to the work I had done previously at a later date.

The second step I took in this process was importing all of my clips into my new project by selecting File > Import > Media...

This brings up a box in which I can select which clips I want to import. To make things easier for myself I imported all of the clips I had with the plan to upload the music and remove or cut down any unwanted footage.

I then selected all of my clips by clicking and dragging over the ones I wanted and then dragging them down into my timeline to begin editing.

Casting, Costume & Set Design Plan

During research into the genre of my music video, Indie Rock, I found that the artists tend to wear very laid back, casual clothing which, tend to be of dark colours. For example, skinny jeans, hats and black suits. The connotations of the costume worn by bands relating to Indie Rock genre are "roughed up"articles of clothing that are often old. The costume worn can be seen as representing a rebellious nature towards the mainstream fashion trends. Though the members of an Indie Rock band tend to shy away from co-ordinating their outfits, many do in a sense. For example all the members would wear some kind of skinny fitted trousers whether they are jeans or smarter trousers. They will all have some form of jacket on and usually sport some ‘tatty’ vintage footwear (however it could vary from trainers to boots). It is all about variation of similar things when regarding fashion.

In all of these costumes that are worn, they are never the same color and are never worn in the same style as the next members. This reveals that people associated with the Indie Rock genre are comfortable with expressing their individuality without going overboard e.g. Like pop sensation Lady Gaga. They do it in a simple way with variations of the same style, this further increases their ‘cool’ reputations as they don’t try too hard to be something they are not. Many are not fussed when it comes to what they wear to play at gigs. They know that it’s going to be hot and sweaty so they adopt the attitude of ‘may as well wear the week old tee-shirt, I’m going to be smelling anyway’, this attitude represents a maverick lifestyle.

Also, the artists facial expressions are usually minimal, keeping them plain and therefore quite serious at times. They are rarely seen smiling in their videos as it is not associated with this genre of music and usually the topic of their songs are based around something dark or sad and so the seriousness of their facial expressions is in keeping with the tone of the song.

In terms of camera shots, there is usually a lot of close ups of lead singers are used in these types of videos so that the audience can associate their band with their music and so that you can see their facial expressions. The settings of these music videos tend to be more urban than rural in indie rock music videos, for example back streets are common settings in the music videos as this goes with their sound and intended look. In relation to the editing, straight cuts are extremely common and are used repeatedly. They do this because it gives the music video a better flow and could suggest that their lives a quick paced or that an element in their life is passing by quickly.

In the image to the left is the Indie Rock band Dawes, in which you can see that no band member looks similar in terms of the style that they adapt, even though the use of certain colours e.g. black, are featured more than once.

Because of this, an audience is able to see the individuals personalities shine through the choice of tops worn. It can be suggested that the lead singer of the band is positioned with his feet further forward than the rest and in the darkest clothing, as this strategically draws the audiences attention towards him and usually the public face of the band is positioned in a way that the readers will notice them first. There is also the use of outdoor clothing (the denim jackets) as it adds a different visual element. The other two members of the band adapt the casual style of t-shirt and unbuttoned checkered shirt over plain colours tees, expressing their relaxed attitude towards fashion.

The preferred choice of trousers of the band are rolled up skinny jeans, however the lead singer is wearing his differently. With regards to their footwear choice, they have all chosen smart boot/brogue type shoes of all the same colour. This highlights the fact that they are a band and therefore have to co-ordinate slightly. There is a minimal use of accessories used, however it is common to see pierced or stretched ears as well as frayed festival bracelets.

Because of this research I have made, I have decided that I am going to have the cast I have chosen in very casual clothing. The girl in my video will be wearing skinny jeans with a grey t-shirt and the boy in my music video will be wearing skinny jeans with a plain grey t-shirt, covered by either a checkered shirt or a hoodie (with or without a black sleeveless denim jacket).

The settings I will use will be in a bedroom, to tell the story of the music video (progressing the narrative) but also in the street where I will be filming the performance element of the music video in order to incorporate the convention of having a rural setting.

As part of my set design plan, I used a floor plan to map out where would be best to place my camera in order to get the angles that I wanted and where to place the two people I have cast as my artists.

These two images show the two people I have cast for my music video. I chose them because they are very reliable and I have used them for a lot of my work. Also, they fit well into the genre I am using (indie rock) as they both usually wear casual clothing and both look like ordinary people rather than a 'star' that has been constructed, which is what I wanted. Another reason is that they both look like a couple, which is important to the context of my video as I try to make this look as real as possible.

Communication

Before filming I kept in contact with both people that had agreed to be in my music video in order to make sure they knew it was definitely going ahead. I double checked when both people were free to film so that there would be no cancelling at last minute and asked them both to help film on a day they both agreed they were free.

When the filming date was agreed upon, I constructed my own risk assessment in order to allow myself time to prepare for anything that may go wrong.

Demographics & Institutions

Demographic information is used in media marketing to classify an audience into age, gender, race and other categories.

In media, as in all business, demographics are used to pinpoint potential audience growth and to spot underperformance. All forms of media are targeted to certain audiences. For example, Cosmopolitan, Woman's Day and Better Homes & Gardens are magazines that reach the female demographic. But beyond that, they target different types of women.

Media companies constantly tweak their products and the way they are advertised to hit a certain demographic group. The publisher of one of the women's magazines who follows demographic trends may decide her audience is becoming too old to attract the top advertisers. So she will focus on putting younger people on the cover and writing articles for a younger female customer to change the magazine's demographic makeup.

In the magazine world, general interest publications that were designed to appeal to people of all ages and both genders sometimes struggle by trying to attract such a broad audience. Life and Look magazines are two examples. Demographic information doesn't just matter in the magazine industry. Television shows, radio stations, newspapers and websites are also produced to appeal to certain groups of people.

On YouTube's data statistics it says that by far, 20-to-35-year-old bloggers are the most enthusiastic about embedding and linking to videos (57.3%). Teenage bloggers (13-19) and those in the 36-to-60-year demographic group embed and link to around 20% each. Those over 60 account for just 1.4%.

When looking at the top categories for each age group, we discovered that older bloggers have a higher interest in the News and Politics category. This category is the least favorite among younger bloggers with less than 5% of total links.

Looking at video tags, Michael Jackson and the cast of the movie The Twilight Saga: New Moon are the most popular names used in tags among teenage bloggers. Older bloggers showed more interest in using tags from the political domain with Barack Obama and other political figures taking the top spots. The table below shows the top names in video tags based on various age groups, implicitly revealing interest trends for individuals and video themes.

Institution Profile

A media conglomerate, media group or media institution is a company that owns large numbers of  companies in various mass media such as television, radio, publishing, movies, and the internet. "Media conglomerates strive for policies that facilitate their control of the markets around the world".

Institutions are the area of media which concern themselves with broadcasting, which channels to broadcast on, radio stations and what artists feature on certain stations in order to create an audience profile.

Target Audiences

NME is a very popular Indie/Indie Rock magazine and so I believe that their reader profile will be very similar, if not the same, as the reader profile I would be targeting with my music video and ancillary texts.

Influences and Initial Ideas

Idea 1:

My first initial idea was to have a completely narrative clip that shows the growing distance between two individuals in a relationship. My idea was to shoot it as a split screen and show these two people doing the same things that normally people in the house would do together, but show them doing it separately. At the end of the video I wanted to have them both facing the camera and then have the split screen disappear and show the audience that they were together the whole time but have a line between them which stops them from being happy together.

Idea 2:

My second idea was influenced by the music video for Olly Murs & Demi Lovato's song 'Up' which shows the two individuals stood at different sides of a wall. I wanted to do this for my music video as it shows that the two people in my video are so close (which is supposed to be to show how they are in a relationship and are therefore so close to making it work) yet theres something between them that stops anything happening (the wall would be used to signify that they have a distance between them). I would use close ups and long shots in order to show the intimacy of the song but also show the two people in the same shot in order to highlight the distance between them. I would end this video by showing both individuals either breaking down as a sign of the relationship breaking both of them, or with them having a sigh of relief that it is finally over.

Idea 3:

My third idea would be a mix between the narrative clip and the performance. It would be the same as my first idea in that the narrative would show a relationship breaking down, however I want to add certain parts where each of the people in my music video individual sing straight to the camera in order to add a performance element. I can also use this to highlight that the relationship is breaking down as I plan on using the performance as a way of showing one person trying to talk to the other and the other person not listening or being too busy to.
